For pure leather, they are basically dead skin preserved in tannery oil. The oil burns, but gets vaporized/washed away over time without proper care (few people do today). Dried leather generally just get toasted and crumble. Some leather is more oily like the ones used by Timberland and Sperry, so ...

Great progress! Though I think Loubs have "L" shaped heel piece so it would be very hard to bend/break.

Seeing the toe up-close, I am thinking maybe you can kick against a wall and pop the toe? The sole seems to be separating already.
