The newest phpBB version does have integrated captcha with control over difficulty: http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/

I think using captcha for every post is not necessary as a properly registered user has already been verified. Of course one could register a valid account and then use a bot software to post using that account but I doubt that spammers would bother doing that as it's only worth it if everything is fully automated.

i believe that is what the spammers are doing to get in here. take a look at the registration page. i doubt a bot could answer the question i added. would at least need a human to give the bot the answer once.
